Uncompromising Excellence in Dental Care

Relax in Comfort with Sedation Dentistry

At Dentistry at the Heights, Dr. Kevin Trotter puts patients at ease by providing sedation options to ease fear and anxiety that may be associated with dental visits. Sedation dentistry can be extremely helpful for patients at our Brooklyn Heights, NY, office under a number of different circumstances.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Many patients avoid going to the dentist because of overwhelming fear and anxiety. This distress can result in a downward spiral in which patients neglect routine as well as necessary dental care. Problems then become worse, which leads to even more avoidance. Other patients make it to their appointments, but suffer greatly under the stress. Sedation dentistry is nothing more than medication administered before or during dental procedures that allows patients to feel calm and relaxed throughout treatment.

The type of sedation your dentist gives you is based on your level of anxiety, the length of your appointment, and what kind of treatment you are receiving.

Modern sedation dentistry methods are safe as well as effective. The type of sedation your dentist gives you is based on your level of anxiety, the length of your appointment, and what kind of treatment you are receiving. Types of sedation offered by Dentistry at the Heights include oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is the use of orally-administered medication to help a patient relax during a dental procedure. The medication is given in pill form and the sedative effects can range from minimal to moderate. You will be given a pill about an hour before your procedure and you should become groggy, but you will not fall into a deep sleep. If your doctor needs to ask you a question or needs you to move a certain way, you will be able to respond.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is the use of an IV to quickly deliver medication to a patient to help him relax while undergoing dental procedures. Our office works closely with an anesthesiologist who is able to quickly adjust the level of sedation, if necessary. Sedation levels are usually in the moderate range.

Candidates for Oral Conscious and IV Sedation

Patients who are very anxious about dental procedures may benefit from oral conscious or IV sedation. These types of sedation may also be beneficial for patients who:

  • Cannot be still in a dentist’s chair
  • Have very sensitive teeth
  • Have a bad gag reflex
  • Have a low pain threshold
  • Need a large amount of dental work done at one time

Our doctors will thoroughly review your health history and current medications prior to determining the type of sedation to use. Because you will be groggy from the sedation, you should have friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment. You should be able to resume your normal activities the following day.
